Professional  Bio

In the Fall of 2013 I was privileged to take a full-time position as assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department.  I will continue to work intermittently as as a speech-language pathologist for Mayo Clinic Health System - Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where I had been a full-time employee since 1998.  I received my Ph.D. in 2015 at Western Michigan University in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences program.

I originally joined the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2008 as adjunct faculty, teaching Motor Speech Disorders. In 2013 I rejoined the department as a full-time faculty member. My interests relate to areas of adult neurogenic communication including aphasia and motor speech disorders, as well as rehabilitation methods,dysphagia, medical speech-language pathology, and the concepts of Flow and engagement.

The Chippewa Valley Aphasia Camp

Aphasia Camp is an innovative, participation-based, socially-modeled weekend opportunity for individuals with aphasia and their families.  Started in 1998, the annual camp provides opportunities for woodworking, archery, canoeing, flyfishing, craftwork, art, conversation and relationship development with participants attending from across the United States and Canada.  Take a look at the slideshow.

In January, 2013 I began a three year, governor-appointed term as a speech-language pathology representative at the state level on the Wisconsin Hearing and Speech Board (WHSB), and currently serve as Chair of the WHSB.  

Interact -- Residential Aphasia Communication Therapy

I spent the majority of the summer of 2007 in Halifax, Nova Scotia working at the InteRACT program - an intensive, residential aphasia program at Dalhousie University.  There I was immersed in aphasia therapy while meeting fantastic staff and incredible participants.

Academics and Instruction

I began pursuit of my PhD in the fall of 2010, enrolling at Western Michigan University in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences PhD program,  and graduated in December of 2015.  In addition to a complete dissertation, four comprehensive examinations must be completed.  The four comprehensive examinations are competency-based and involve completion of the following activities and products:

1.  Research paper and presentation. The submission for publication of a formal  research paper based on the student's research practicum.

2.  Policy analysis. A written comprehensive analysis of a health care or human services policy.

3.  Grant application. The development and submission of a competitive external research grant proposal.

4.  Teaching portfolio.
A portfolio reflecting on the teaching of a fully developed course using innovative instructional techniques.
